Podiatry is such an indispensable treatment option for so many conditions, including chronic pain, arthritis, skin/nail care and diabetes, and there are ways to access Medicare rebates and funding.
To be able to access things like Medicare rebate for Podiatry should be very easy, but unfortunately Medicare rebates are not always that straight forward.
We want to be able to help you access the help that you need, as quickly as humanly possible and, as foot experts who help people with these types of conditions every day, we would love to help explain the Medicare rebate process a little more.
It can be a really easy process once you understand it, so let us help you wrap your head around Medicare and how it can work for your Podiatry needs.
CAN I GET A MEDICARE REBATE FOR PODIATRY?
The short answer, is YES!
The long answer is yes, but there are a couple of conditions.
A Medicare rebate for podiatry can be accessed under the CDM Program, which is the Chronic Disease Management Program (sometimes referred to as EPC or Team Care Arrangement).
First, you must meet the criteria, which is principally centred around 'chronic' conditions (it’s in the name!), meaning something that you have suffered with for more than three months.
Secondly, you need to have the appropriate referral form from your GP, who needs to send you to a specific Podiatry clinic (hopefully us, we'd love to help!)
HOW MANY VISITS WILL THE MEDICARE CDM REBATE COVER?
The Medicare CDM Program allows for a total of up to five rebated consults to any referred allied health practitioner, per year.
That could include Podiatry, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology, etc.
So, for instance, your GP may refer you for three Podiatry consults and two Physiotherapy consults. This number is renewed each year, but you will need a new referral each year. The referral can be issued at any time of the year (not necessarily calendar year), however only five visits are able to be claimed each calendar year.
HOW MUCH DOES THE MEDICARE REBATE COVER?
The current Medicare rebate (as at March 2018) is $52.95 per consult, irrespective of the specific service that you choose.
That means that the rebate is $52.95 for an initial consult and any subsequent review consults that you might be recommended for as well. At NSTT we charge a small gap fee alongside the rebate to ensure that we can provide the best experience (and longer consults) for our patients.
Generally, this is around $50 for your initial consult (which is 45 mins of comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, planning and treatment) and around $20 for any subsequent consults.
HOW DOES THE MEDICARE CDM REBATE PROCESS WORK?
It is a tricky little process - the joys of working with a government body!
At our practice, what you need to do is actually pay the full fee upfront yourself first and then we can process the Medicare rebate and get it back to you on the spot.
Specifically, here are the steps:
You need to pay the full fee any way that suits you... cash, credit care or debit card.
If you have your bank details registered with Medicare, they will immediately put the rebate back into your account.
If you do not have your bank details registered with Medicare, we can swipe your Medicare card and DEBIT card and access the $52.95 rebate for you on the spot. Note that you cannot use a CREDIT card for this process.
